Past projects

Dynamic Fire Evacuation Route, 2017 – 2018

For our second year group project, we looked at the issues with evacuating buildings in the event of a fire. Inspired by the tragic catastophe that befell Grenfell Tower in London in 2017, we looked at designing new form of fire warning system, that would dynamically direct inhabitants of large buildings towards the closest available route in the event of a fire. The system, known as DFER consisted of 3 parts:

  • Sensors, detecting the fire and smoke
  • Lumieres, directing people towards the nearest exit
  • A control centre, connecting both subsystems and running an algorithm to determine optimum route to the exit

Nixie clock, 2013 – 2014

Detailed breakdown here

In 2014, one of my first multi-stage projects was to make a Nixie tube based clock, whilst not breaking new ground or discovering novel techniques – it was my first attempt at having an entire embedded system built on a PCB. It was a great success and contributed to my professional portfolio helping me to get into university.
